Every single registered domain name has no less than 2 Name Server records which show where it's hosted i.e. by using these records you direct your domain to the servers of a certain hosting company. That way, you've got both your site and your emails handled by the very same provider. On the lower level of the Domain Name System (DNS), nevertheless, there are lots of other records, like A and MX. The former reveals which server deals with the website for a given domain and is always an IP address (123.123.123.123), while the second one shows which server handles the e-mails and is always an alphanumeric string (mx1.domain.com). As an example, any time you enter a domain name in your Internet browser, your request is sent through the global DNS system to the company whose NS records the domain name uses and from there you will be forwarded to the servers of a different service provider in case you have set an IP address of the latter as an A record for your domain name. Having separate records for the site and the e-mails means you can have your website and your e-mails with 2 different companies if you wish.

Custom MX and A Records in Shared Hosting

If you have a shared hosting account from our company and you would like to direct either your site or your emails to a different service provider, it is going to take you literally only 2 mouse clicks to do so. Our Hepsia CP comes with an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domain names and subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically and you're going to be able to see and modify the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you wish to use a different e-mail provider and they ask you to set up more MX records than the standard two, it won't take more than a few mouse clicks either to add them. You can even set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the higher the priority a given MX record will have. The propagation of every record that you change or create will not take more than a few hours and if required, you'll also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, which shows how long a record will remain active after it's changed or deleted.
